Bold Abstract Art in a Minneapolis Home

November 10, 2017

Loud and inquisitive artwork makes Savannah feel right at home. So when she asked me to channel Franz Kline (an abstract expressionist) for a large piece in her new Minneapolis duplex, I wasn't surprised. Her sophisticated taste in decor and love for abstract art comes together elegantly in her bedroom. Check it out:

Savannah and I were excited about going LARGE with the Franz Kline inspired piece next to her desk. The 36 x 48 inch painting has an oversized vertical composition that draws your eye up and around her room; it takes advantage of her sizable open space. I was intentional about making wide strokes and leaving visible textures within the black paint -it all pops against the white canvas background and her soft yellow walls.

The three pieces above her bed pull in gold accents and balance the greys, black, and other chic neutrals in her room. One of these pieces is a lithography print I made in college at St. Olaf (Um Ya Ya!). If you look closely, you can find separate figures and faces that are layered on top of one another. The painting beside it is an abstract acrylic piece that Savannah requested incorporate gold, and few statement colors of deep purple and pink. A spiky metal mirror completes this arrangement above her bed.

It's important to use a variety of sizes when incorporating more than two art pieces into one room. So I created a few smaller pieces for Savannah's gallery wall across her bed. These works add an important and sensitive touch without competing against the large abstract painting on her other wall.

I also made a detailed B&W pen drawing of the Pont des Arts Bridge in Paris for Savannah's desk. It pairs elegantly with a candle and her bouquet of dried roses that she saved from a friend's wedding.

The final touch was a monographed floral door hang. Savannah practices calligraphy and she initialed an "S" inside my floral wreath drawing -it seriously couldn't be any prettier.

Altogether, Savannah's bedroom feels utterly inviting, thoughtful, and balanced. I absolutely loved help make her new Minneapolis duplex bedroom an art-filled home!

XO,

Christina
